SWIMMING.
PROPOSED BATHS,
A largely-attended meeting of those in? forested in raising funds for the ereotion of swimming baths for Gisborne was held in the Borough Council Chambers last even iDg. His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Townley) occupied the obair, Mr Rowley explained what was re quired, and proposed that a social be held to form the nucleus of a fund to erect swimming baths in the echool grounds. Mr W. Morgan seconded the proposition. He said the Education Department would pay capitation on those children
isught to swim. Mr Birrell aeked if the baths would be spen to the publio. He was strongly in 'avor of public baths being erected here. Mr Rowley explained that the baths would be under the control of a Swimming □lab, which it was proposod to form. Mr Colley suggested that Me Wauchop, who had been closely connected with Swimming Associations and swimming baths throughout New Zealand, should give them some idea of how these institutions were managed. Mr Wauchop lucidly explained the management of swimming baths. Ho stated that baths that bad been ereoted in school grounds, and had the support of thoso attending tho sohool, were always much more successful than baths that were either privately rr munioipaliy owned, iDstaooiog tho baths at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, as ao example of the latter kind. He regarded swimming as important a branch of technical education as carpentering or plumbing. After other gentlemen had spokm, the motion was put to tho meeting and cairied unanimously. It was decided to hold tho social on Juno 7th and B'b, in the New Zealand Shipping Co.’s wool storo, if it wore available on thoso dates. Mr Wauohop stated that ho had approached Mr Hallomore on tho subject, but the latter would not bo able to givo a doGnite reply until about the second week in May.
Messrs T G, Lawless and J. S. Wau chop were appointed joint secretaries, and Mr J. Town'oy aeliog chairman, It was proposed bb a recommendation lo the finance committee that the tickets bo 5s for gentlemen and 2j 61 for ladies fer the first n'gbt, and 1s all rouud for tho children’s night. It was decided to form an executive oommiitee, whoso duties it will be to organise sub committees.
