The tremors traversed the entire Con' tioent. THE RECORDS. The tremors were recorded at Washington, Ottawa, Vienna, and the Isle of Wight, SHOOKS MORNING, AFTERNOON, AND EVENING.
There were three severe shocks in the morniDg at intervals of some hours, and ■lighter shooks in the afternoon, and early in the evening. RUSH FROM BED TO STREET. Most of the people we _ e asleep. They rushed from their beds in the streets it) night attire. MANGLED BY DEBRIS. Buildings came tottering and orasbing down. There were showers of fading chimneys, cornices, and walls, the debris crushing and mangling many. INDESCRIBABLE SCENE. The terror and exoitement caused is in» describable. STEEL STRUCTURES. The modern tall steel frame structure stood better than the brick and wooden tenements. SLIDE INTO BAY. Some docks and freight sheds slid into the bay. DEEP FISSURES. Deep fissures opened near the shore, THE WRECKAGE. The business district between Market and Howard streets from the bay as far west as the City Hall was especially wreoked.
