RIVAL CABLES.
Bjs telegraph, Frese Aes’n, Copyrigh Melbourne, April 9
A eiroular issued by the Australian manager of tho Eastern Extension Company states that the company has decided it is morally bound to comply with tho Govornmsnt’s request to ooasa collecting cablegrams ; in the meantime legal opinion is beiDg taken Most of the limpany'* sieff of operators and other employees will probably bo transferred to other stations.
Ia a letter to tho postal authorities Mr Hoese, general manager, contended th 9 ■Senate’s amendment was contrary to the uplril and letter of tho Federal agroemont, hut the company wore desirous of working umioably with tho Department, and were firmly of the opinion that an agreement oould be made whiob, while preserving the independence and autonomy of the Paoifio cable would produoe marked financial and other advantages to all the Governments interested in that enterprise. The Chairman of Direotors of the East fro Extension Company, in a loiter to Mr iOaakiD, points out the inoonvenienoe caused to oommeroial interests by the closing of the Melbourne office. He hints @Mho possibility of contesting the action the Government have taken in order to deteriorate the Eastern’s yervioo with a view to securing' more business for the Pacific, thereby reducing Australasia’s annual loss of £30,000 over tho .Paoifie. Co 5 plaint is made that since tho opening of the Paoific oablo all uuroutad traffic between Australia and Britain has been given to the Paoifio. Another complaint is the refusal by tho Government officers to accept telegrams marked " via Eastern." It is suggested that this is not legal. He suggests it should not be beyond tbs resouroefulness of the Federal Governmont and Company to devise in consultation soma soheme which would diminish and ultimately extinguish the financial loss now accruing to Australia from the Paoifio oablo, and also to guartee the Paoifio enterprise against the results of possible interruption. The Government and Company might, it is urged, find a mutually acoeptable solution,
