GROWN LAND SALE.
GREAT RUSH FOR SECTIONS, REALISE FOUR TIMES THE RESERVES. There was a great rush at the Land and Survey Offioe yesterday morniDg at II o’olook, when the sale of the township sections in the districts of Patutabi, Motu, and Tolago Bay came up for consideration. It was soon apparent to tho Commissioner (Mr E. C. Gold-Smith) and his efficient staff, that the accommodation at the disposal of the Department was altogether inadequate, and a speedy adjournment was made to the DrilFshed, where there was room for aff. In that plaoe there crowded around the small table, whioh took the form of an auctioneer’s rostrum, a crowd of hungry in-; vestors and speculators, intermixed with genuine settlers, the latter being few. and far between. The proceedings opened with the disposal of the Patutahi seotions, whioh readily found purchasers. A well-known busineß3 man in Gisborne who bad not viewed the sections opened at the npset price for the first quarter acre, and after a dozen bids the property fell to Mr CL Smith at £27. The same purchaser also secured the adjoining section (quarter-aore) at £2B 10s. In another part of the town section 92 (32 perches) went to Mr W. J. Bruoe at £l7 10s.
That Tolago Bay is ooming into great favor was evident by the bidding for these sectione, whioh was most spirited, the quarter-aore lots in some casos realizing four times the reserves plaoed upon them, whilst all sold at two or three . times the upset priees. J After the great activity evinoed by the'-' East Coast Railway League in regard to the Gisborne-Auokland connection it was only natural that there should have been; a keen demand for properties in. popular township. The sale was iu a measure discounted by the faot that the railway station is likely to be two or three miles away from the township, but when it is borne in mind that the Motu is the junction of the fout chief roads in the district this did not make any material difference in the opinion of those most competent to judge. The two corner seotions opposite the Motu hotel were secured by Mr C. Smith, of Gisborne, and although offers of £lO and £2O per section were made after the eale, that gentleman refused to sell, The sale altogether was the moet successful of the kind ever held in Gisborne. Only two sections out of sixty were passed, and these oouid have been readily disposed of after the sale, only the Government regulations prevented the same. At the sale the Commissioner announoed that any sections passed would have to be advertised and submitted again to auction, and this will have to be done in the ease of the two seotions mentioned,-
