A PROGRESSIVE TOWN.

Pa’imrston Nortb, last night, Palmerston North still shows signs of absolute solvency and prosperity, judging by the borough records, On the 31st March only five ratepayers were io arrears with their rates, the total sum amounting to Ll 5 11s 6d, and of that sum over LlO ia io dispute owing to Supremo Court oasep, and may be fairly held uncollect ab’o at present, wbilo the Council hold an order on wages for nearly L 3. This leaves less than L 3 uncalled which might havo been recovered by legal proceedings. Tbo total rates of the borough were increased last year from LU,171 to L 13,307, rnrde up of increases on now loans, extra water supplied to now buildings, end extra charges for sanitary work. In addition to this the ratepayers have paid over 'LI6OO for new footpaths, mostly authorised by tbe last oonnoil. During the year over L4OQ was paid for building permits, showing also that money is not so scarce as it
is believed to be. Last year the borough held the record for the colony with a olean sheet as regards aooounts owing, and this year with a little over Ll 5 it should hold a good plaoe,
