OPENING CEREMONY,

Tbo Viotoiia University College was opened ta-day by His Excellency the Governor. The new building occupies a commanding site near Salamania Road, overlooking the city and harbour. There was a largo attendance of tho public. On arrival His Excellency was weloomed by Sir Robert Stout, Chancellor of tbe University, and conduced to the .hall in which the opening oeremoDy took place. In an introductory speech Sir Robert trnoed tbe history of university education in the colony, and emphasised its importance to the rising generation. He anticipated that before long Victoria College would have a larger number of students than any of the other university colleges in the oolony. His Exoellonoy raid Wellington now po:sessed a college building adequate to its needs. He wished the council and professors every success, and exhorted students to maintain the dignity of their college. Mr McGowan, Minister for Justice, gave a short address, in which hs ex pressed his belief that she University should.be free to every boy and girl.
