POPULATION STATISTICS

A return showmg the movement of population in New Zealand during the quinquennial period, 1901-1905, has been issued from the office of the Registrar* General. On December 31, 1901, the population (excluding Maori*) was 787,6i>7, the increase duriog the year being-.—By excess if births over deaths, 12,857 ; by exoess of arrivals over departures, 6522 ; nr a total increase of 19,379, or 2-52 per oent. on the population of the previous year. The figures for the undermentioned years are es follows : 1902 : Population, 807,929 ; increase by exoess of births over deaths, 12,280 ; increase by exoesa of arrivals over de» partures, 7992 ; net inorease, 20,272, or 2 57 per cent. 1903: Population, 832,505; increase by excess of births over deaths. 13,301 ; inoreaseby excess of arrivals over departures, 11,275; net increase, 24,576, or 304 per oent.

1904 : Population, 857.639 ; increase by excess of births over deaths, 14,679; increase by exoeßS of arrivals over departures, 10,355; net increase, 25,034, or 3 01 per cent. 1905 : Population, 882,462 ; inorease Joy excess of births over deaths, 15,621 ; increase by excess of arrivals over departures, 9302 ; net increase, 24,923, or 2 91 per cent.
