RECOGNITION OF SERVICES.

Tho New York Tribune states that Japan is goiDg to reward her heroes. Admiral Togo, Marquis Oyama, General Kuroki, and other Japanese officers, and the men of the rank and file are to divide an immense sum in recognition of their services in the war with Russia. In addition to this, the widows and orphans of the soldiers and seamen are to be recognised. This announcement is made by Korokio Takahasbi, vice governor of the Bank of I Japan and special finance commissioner of Japan, in the New York Tribune. The grants will vary in size accord ing to the ranks of the recipients and the oharaotor of the service rendered. The Tribune says: It is planned to issue a new series of bonds amounting to £43,000,000, to be | floated entirely at home. Qf this amount £15,000,000 is to be distributed in grants in recognition of services in connection with the war. About half the amonot will be for the widows and orphans of eoldiers and sailors. Mr Takahasbi himself will be one of those to benefit by his country’s generosity. Admiral Togo will receive one of the largest single grants, and with him will stand several of his subordinates, notably Admiral Kamimnra and Admiral Uriu. There will also be liberal albwanoe ances for the survivors of the 180 men who made the four desperate attempts to block the entrance to the harbor to Port Arthur, Only 36 of these men escaped with their lives. Field-Marshal Marquis Oyama heads tbe list of the lend forces, and with him stand Nogi, the hero of Port Arthur ; Kuroki and Kodama, who went in a major and came out a major general.
