PRISONER SUICIDES

'(Pen Press Association.) Hamilton, last night.

A man named James Mills, who was arrested et Ngaruawahia on Saturday on a charge of the theft of a wa'cb, was found dead in the police cell the foßowing morning with bis throat cut. Another prisoner in the eann cell says he knew nothing of the tragedy until he awoke in the morniDg and found Mills dead. The inquest was delayed for the attendance of the chief detective.

FURTHER PARTICULARS. (Per Press Asaociatiojn.) Auckland, last night. Oh Saturday an old man named James Mills was locked up in the Ngaruawahia lockup on a charge of theft. A man named O'Brien, alias Dolan, was later put into the same cell, also on a charge of theft. Constable Cavanagh searched both prisoners before locking them up, and visited at 12.30, when Mills appeared lo be asleep. At six o’clock on Sunday morning O’Brien called out, and Constable Cavanagh went to see what was the matter. He was told by him that the prisoner Mills had cut his throat. Inspection by the oonstable revealed that this was so. The man’s throat was cut right across, and ho was quite dead. A razor was lying alongside the body.
