TBE QUESTION OF ASSISTANCE. (Pot Preso Association.) Christchurch, last night. Some time ago the Government made offers of assistance to tbe Japanese Government ia connection with the famine in Japan, but the Premier was informed by tbe Japanese authorities that the famine was not of such an extensive character as to call for outside betp. Mr Soddon has now received word from tbe Japan Government that the aroa affected by tho famine is more extensive than bad been supposed, and that the Government will be glad to accept any donations for relief of sufferers. The High Commissioner also informs Mr Scddon that a mansion house relief fund has already been opened. Mr Scddon intends to take the matter in hand, but at tbe same time expresses regret that his original suggestion was not aoted upon at the time,
