LICENSING ELECTION.

THE NEW COMMITTEE,

Tho election for tho Waiapu L ! censing Oommittoo took plaoc yoßtorday, the proooodiogs boiDg very quiet. Tbo results to hand last night wero as follows: —

Matawhero Schoolhouse—

COLONIAL RETURNS,

(For Press Association.) MastertOD, last night. Tbo lioensing eleotion resulted in tbe return of the old committee, consisting of four moderates and one prohibitionist. Tbe latter headed tbe poll. Blenheim, last night, There was unusually heavy polling at the licensing elrotion. The result is a win for tho ten o’clock tioket. Only one member of the old oommitteo was returned. Dunedin, last night.

Tbo Lioensing Committee election for Taieri exoited a good deal of interest. Tbe returns are not completed, as four have yet to oome to hand, bnt they are ecaroely likely to affect the result. The nolioense party’s candidates are, therefore, fairly sure of election. Tbeir lowest candidate, tbe Rev. Boreham, reoeived 1210, while Mrßlaokie, the highest moderate, received 1116.

The Licensing Committee eleotion for Waikouaiti excited a good deal of interest looally. As reduotion had been oarried at the looal option pjff, the returning offioer did not put tbe local bodies to tbe expense of opening country telegraph offloes, and the ro:ult is that only a few returns are to hand, but as those include tbo largest oentres, it is evident that the no license party committee will be elected, as they have a load of about 109 over the others. Only a fair amount of interest was taken in tbe licensing committee eleotion

for Dunedin City. Early in the day it was evident that the Moderates were likely to succeed, es tbo women did not turn up to any extent, and the result proved that this was this oase. The number of votes polled was 7144. The whole of Ihe Moderates were elected, the difference beiDg 600, which Burnett (who headed the Moderates) reoeived over tbe Rev. W. A. Sinclair, who headed the hollo; ns3 candidates, 3339.

The o'ection for Caversham was keenly contested. Tbe result haß been that four of tho no-licensa party’s candidates were eleoted, and Elliott, one of the Moderates, beating Love by five votes. Tbe Licensing Committee eleotion for Chalmers wbs keenly contested. The result is not definitely known, as four returns have yet to come, one from Nevalley, which is fairly large, not baying been communicated to the Returning Officer. It is believed to be representative of other districts, in which event the no lioense party have secured four members and the moderates one, the latter at present heading the poll, due no doubt to personal popularity. As the result of the eleotion of a nolicense committee for Taieri is now assured the full number of licenses, three, will bo abolished, and no conditional licenses, it is understood, will be granted for Dunedin Jockey Club's raceooqrse at Wingatui.

Westport, last night, The licensing eleotion for Buffer proceeded quietly to-day. There were 13 candidates for five seats. With 15 returns to come four of the old committee appear to bo eleoted, with Irving, of Reefton, displacing O'Neill, of Westport, for fifth seat. Thames, last night.

Considerable interest was taken in the llooneing eleotion to-day, tho polling being

heavy. It was generally believed that shops had to observe a half-holiday, but reference to the Auckland representative of the Labor Department alioited the opinion that the holiday was optional; consequently few business places closed. Two distinct tickets wero nominated, moderate independents and temperance independents. With several returns to come, whioh may alter the election, throe temperance and two moderate candidates at vresont bead tbo poll. Palmerston North, last night.

The Palmerston licensing election resulted in the return ot four moderates and one prohibitionist (Pirani), the voting being as follows : W. T. Wood, M.H.8., 1323, Harry Palmer 1265, William Beck 1243, Pirani 1166, J. M. J.hnston 1’49.

Feilding resumed three modoratefa,i;!?.d , two prohibitionists (Cartbew anjf\jr mond), the voting being as follows 562, Goodbehere 558, Caithew 549, Rich, mond 645, Dick 521. /

Wellington, last night. There was no Bppearaoce of partionlar interest being taken in the licensing committee eleetion to-day. The result of the polling was the icturn of the candidates who Btood on the ten o’clock closing ticket and as nominees of the prohibitionist party. The committee elcoted for the Hutt district is of the opposite complexion Chrietchurob, last night.

Complete returns of the Licensin Committee elections were not availab' when the Telegraph Office closed, but i the result of 13 ont of 18 polling place including the principal polling place, tl five candidates of no-license pe#bp had stroDg lead, the fifth in order of prohibit!* having 276 more votea than th'c highest! the other party’s candidates.
