REFORM ASSOCIATION.

AN INTERVIEW,

(Foe Prosit Association.) Dunedin, last night. The Hon, J. McGowan, Minister of Justioe, was waited |on by a deputation from the Prison Reform Association, who, while thanking him for reforms instituted, wished to make other suggestions, Indeterminate sentences was one of the matters, substituting properly trained probationary offioers for policemen was another, and a further suggestion was that the names of juvenile offenders should not remain oh the police records for every trivial oSenoe. The Minister said he liked to have conversational dieouesions with such associations. He pointed out that muoh could be done by looking after prisoners just j released after Berving sentences, and in this respect the prisoners’ aid sooieties had done more good than the public wbb aware of. He rather favored indeterminate sen* tenoes. He did not think the Elmira system had always been the suooess they were led to believe. The suggestion not to reoord names was a rather dangerous' one. Records were wanted, but it might be possible after a certain number of years to erase the names. With respect to giving education in industrial schools, he would bring the matter under the notice of his colleagues.
