A SERIOUS CHARGE.
At Waihi on Friday, a man named Thomas Peard was brought up at the Police Court on four charges of criminally assaulting his niece, a youog girl under 15 years of age. Mr Mays appeared for the Crown and Messrs Jackson and Mueller for the accused. The girl gave evidence as to the alleged offence. Evidence was also given by the girl’s adopted mother, who was aunt to the child and also sister to the aconsed. She had not always lived amicably with her brother, but she had no malice against him. Uodor crossexamination, witness said that the girl was not always obedient. She had left home a couple of times when witness was angry with her, and Bpent the Dight with friends. Evidence was given by Dr. Craig, Dr. Claridge, and Mr J. A. Pond, Government analyst, after which the presiding justices of tho peace (Messrs Gilmour and King) oommitled the accused for trial, bail being allowed, himself in £IOO and two sureties of £SO eaoh,
