At the Dunedin Police Court Essie D, Leach was charged with having ill-treated and neglected a child. Accused is a married woman, with a child adopted, the subjeot of the oharge, firom the Salvation Army Home, and received a premium. The evidence showed tho child had lost weight, and had brui.es about the body and faoe. Neighbors heard it crying, and the child preaonted tho appearance of being neglected. The woman iu her evidence ' said her husband bad been cruel to her, and she had to lrave heme twice. She denied neglect or ill-treatment, and conld only account for the bruises by her own child striking the other. Mr Hanlon, for the defence, raised the point that the hus-
band was custodian of the child, and not the woman, There was no evidenoe of wilful neglect or ill-treatment. Mr Graham, S.M., reserved his decision.
