FISHING INDUSTRY.

A meeting of those interested in the flotation of a company for the purpose of of exp'oiting tha fishing industry in the district was held in the Masonic Hotel last eveniog. Mr J..W. Bain presided and expla’ned the objects of the meo’ing, calling upon Mr Cottrell to explain the praolioal part of the industry. Mr Cottrell explained the advantages of trawling, and noted that two boats were available, one at Auckland, and one at Wellington. The vessels would cost about £IOOO pec boat, with eay £l2O for conveniences, and would be fit to cope with any weatbor. He considered that the fish woro in sufficient quantities on the coast to pay all expenses, if not a profi‘, and later to pay a dividend.

After discussion on the Bubjeot it was decided on the motion of Mr E. L. Maude to call a meeting on Monday, March 39, when Mr Cottrell would lay before them all partioula's as regards cost of appliances necessary, and an estimate of the working cost per week, and also estimated return of yield, and price to be realised by sale of same. The meeting was of a very enthusiastic naluie, and as considerable support has been promised the new industry, it is highly probable that within a few months Gisborne will bs able to supply its own demands in th's commodity.
