METHODIST CONFERENCE

(Per Press Association.) Dunedin, last night.

At the Methodist Conference tho disoussion on the question of independence, postponed from last Friday, was resumed this morning. The Rev. J. N. Buttle moved tho “previous question,” on tho ground that it would be unfair to submit a question of snob importance to so attenuated a conference, so many of the members having returned to their homes. After considerable disoussion, the motion was carried, aud tho committeo discharged. The Rev. W. Slade was appointed general secretary and 00-treasuror with F. L, Prime, of tho Home Mission Fund. The Rev. J. Ward was appointed Methodist editor of the Outlook. Tha Methodist Conference directed that sermons on temperaooa be preaohad in all its ohuro’aes on tho last Sunday in November. It also requested that ministers and looal proaobers preach on the ques tion of gambliog. A committee on public morals was elected, the Rev W. A. Sin* olair being secretary and oonvener. The following resolution was passed :—“ The conferenoe representing the Methodist Church of Hew Zealand respectfully requests tho authorities responsible for the management of the New Zealanl Exhibition to be opened in Christehurch in November, 1906, (1) that provision bs made in connection with the opening ceromony for the recognition of God ; (2) that the exhibition be olosod on each Sunday ; (3) that no license be granted for the ea'e of intoxicating liquor on the Exhibition grounds. The next Conference is to note tin Ohristohureh in 1907, the date to be fixed by the president. Tho thanks of the Conference wore heartily given to the Conferoooe officers, Press, and those who so hospitably entertained ministers and lay members. In the evening there was a young people’s demonstration in the Trioity Church. Addresses by Sister Olive, Rovs. 0. Porter and H. L. Blamires were given. The Conference meets on Tuesday morning to read the journal.
