The weather was perfect, aad there was one of the biggest orowd3 ever attending the opening day of the msetiog. The Gover"’hspr General was present, and a large party from Government House. The day’s racing led off with the favorite’s win in the Hopeful Stakes, and in the eeoond race Lady Wa'laoe did not disappoint her baokera. For the Newmarket Handioap ail appeared. Laoblan was favorite, and Maobine Gan found baokers at 13 to 1. The resnlts were:
Hopeful Stakes. Gapon, 7.10 1 Contort, 7.7 2 Lexington J Portland Bob 4. Lexington and Portland Bob were a dead-hea' l for third place. Sixteen horses started The b-tting was 7 to 2 against Gapoo and Katsooga. The latter got away first, bat Gapon established a lead stid won by a length. The others foogbt oat for third place. The time was 1.4. Leger. Lady Wallaoe 1 Cironit 2 Charles Staart 8 Kaffirpaa was the only other starter The bßitiag was 5 to 1 on Lady Wallaoe 4 to 1 against Charles Staart, 8 to 1 Kaffir paa. Aa even atari was effeoced, Charles Staart and Circuit leading alternately. Girouit led into the straight. At the distance Lady Wallace came away to the I front and won by five lengths, 1£ lengths separating second and third. The time was 3.i5j.

Coming into the bourse proper Pendant had the field in hand, and increasing a well-established lead won by two length?, Duke of Melton a head away third. Time, 1.16£. The betting was 4 to 1 Lachlan, 9to 2 Pendant, 10 to 1 Gladsome and Daks of Melton, 14 to 1 Medallist, IS to 1 Pompous, 20 to 1 Step Oat, Posco, and Palindrome, 25 to 1 North Head. Essendon Stakes. Tartan... 1 Proossdor 2 Soot Free 3 The other starters were Blao Speo and The Infanta. The betting was 4 to 1 on Tartan, 4to 1 against Soot Free. Tartan won by a length. Time, 2.41. Brunswick Stakes, Boyoroft ... ... ... 1 Bright Beauty ... ... 2 Siesta ... 1 ... 3 Tfia ofber starters were Shipman, Nowmarke*, Vilirate, Maoinge, Elysium, iDporto, and Mezzo. The betting was sto 2 Boyoroft, 5 to 1 Bright Beauty, 6 to 1 Vilirate and Oporto, 7 to 1 Elysium, 10 to 1 Siesta. Boyoroft won by 1£ lengths, a head separating the seoond and third horses.
