FIRE AT NELSON.

LIBRARY AND MUSEUM GUTTED (Per Press Association.) - Nelson, la-*t night. At about three thi- morning a fire broke out in the institute, public 1-brary, and museum, and the fire getting unier tbe iron roof and a good broiza also blowing, the buildings, with the exception of the museum, worß completely gutted. A great many books end seme things from the museum were removed to ea’ety, but ibe loes is groat. The library contained many valuable and some rare work*, while the museum, though not large, possessed unique things. Tbe museum was a comparatively new build'ng atr-aobed tu tbiinstiiute, of wbioh Maxw-11 Bury was the a chitect, and tbe foundation stone u* laid by Dr Hoobrtetser io August, 1859 Over tbe trout port on of the Horary Buil* r Saxon, surveyor, had tffic s. and his records and those of John Rocbfort and others were destroyed, as well as fnstru ments, Mr Saxon estimates his loss at £SOO. The institute building was insured for £6OO, and tbe books for only £SOO Mr Baxon’a instruments, cto., were insured for £l5O, but he is not certain of the offices. It is impossible to estimate tbe loss. The building was left apparently safe at half past nine on the previous night.
