EAST COAST NEWS.

TOKOMARU BAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Tokomaru Bay, Feb. 19.

A most successful race mooting was held hero last week by tho local Natives, the whole six events beiug keenly contested. Tho two old favorites, Dolly Grov and Avalanche, each won a race. The gathering was a most orderly one, and reflects credit upon the management, which was entirely in the hands of the Natives. The Tokomaru Farmers’ Co-opera- j tive Company have bought out the Tokomaru Trading Company and will take over tho business from the Ist of March.

Tho dumping machinery and engine aro being put in position this week in the new shed, and the wharf only requires the tramway to be laid down and the hoist erected to have everything ready for landing and shipping goods. The potato blight has reached us .here, and in fact all along the Coast it is doing its work. Kumeras are looking well, and it is to be hoped the blight will not affect this staple crop of tho natives, upon which they depend so largely for their food supply. On Saturday last tho Haupiri, from the South, landed a very large cargo )f general merchandise, and the Itaoo, from North, at the same time also landed a heavy cargo. Nothing has been heard yet of our ijhool contractors, the contract for he building having been let about ibree months ago. We are still hoping ;o have the school erectod before the >ad. weather sets in. The post office ontract which has also been let ought o be pushed on without delay. Our roads are in splendid order, and he mail coach is running an excellent ervice, and is being well patronised ly the travelling public.
