IMPORTANT SPEECH. . • (Per Press Association.) Ashburton, last night. At the ceremony of . opening the new High School, the Premier said that in 1891 £366,250 bad been spent in the co’ony on education, while in 1904 the oxpendi-.u'e was £590,774, au increase of £224 624, There had been a Bteady increase in t*'B expenditure oa education for three years. During 1903-4 5 the trial expenditure had been £1,994,321. Parliamant always cheerfully voted money for eduoational purposes- E lucation was one question od tvhioh there was no party feeliDg. He thought the colony should train its own vetetioary surgaons instead of importing them. Ho would like to see schools for agrioulture established in the country: district?, so that the sons of farmers (should be able to test sods and sa'y'what they were best fitted to prodaoe. Referring to the oadet -movement, he said the Home authorises were inquiring with a view to establishing suoh a system. He was confident tbat as soon as the Mother Country took up the cadet movement no more would be heard of conscription. He would give every cadet corps in the colony the chance of an annual oamp.
