The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, FEB. 20, 1906. COASTAL PROGRESS.

Tiie important stock sales to be held at Tolago Bay to-day mark an important step in the advancement of the East Coast district. The sale is the inauguration of what must certainly become a market place of great proportions.; The number of entries is ample >proof of the magnitude of the business to be transacted, and with a fair proportion of buyers present there should be a highly satisfactory report to make on the inaugural sales. We tender our hearty congratulations to the promoters of the fixture," and hope that the outcome will be such as to fully ijustify . their faith in that portion of the district. There is every reason j to believe that the sales will be a great success. —

Mr Williams is to be congratulated on his putohafe, end we trust that the chabgo of ownership will result in a change of luck. Full Cry is eight 'years old, and being perfeotly sound should be* heard of at future meetings. For the presont the horse will be quartered at Mr Williams’ homestoad at Wairoa. The sporting public of Gisborne will be interested to know tbat the local champion Mahutonga is to have a well deserved rest, and is not likely to be seen spotting silk before next spring. The owners have deemed this oourae advisable on aocount of the heavy raoing that Mahutonga has reoonily undergone, and the crushing weights which have been allotted the son of Quilt have not given him a chance to distinguish himself. Thoto is not a horse : in New Zealand which has been so badly treated by the bandioappers, and tbe owners have good reason for complaint. Mahufonga will he quartered in Gisborne during tbe next six months, being in oharge of tbe well-known looal trainer, Mr M. Maher.
