BOERS’ OBJECTION TO CHINAMEN
MESSAGE FROM THE EMPLOYERS SIDE.
By telegraph, Presa Aas’n,. Copyright Rioeived 4 20 p.m., Feb. 18. Capetown, Feb. 17.
The Volkstern, reiterating the popular tion argument, resists one vote one value on the ground that it will give the Rand thirty-one members and the rest of the country twenty-nine. It urges that if this franchise principle is upheld the Chinese question ought to be settled by a referendum of tbe whole of South Africa or by the Imperial Governmmt.
London, Feb. 17.
The Times’ Johannesburg correspondent’s pronouncement in the Helvolk’s organ is attributed to London inspiration. The suggestion regarding Chinese, in view of Sir H. Campbell Bannerman's probably retaining the votora’ basis of' representation, indicates that the Boars foresee the country’s verdict, and as a referendum is an impossibility, wish Sir H. Campbell Bannerman to take a decision .checking the colony's prosperity and therewith the growth of British population.
