There is no information as to any yachts coming down the coast. Tho Sports Committee of the Caledonian Society met lest evening at tbo Farmers’ Union Club rooms, and made complete arrangements for tho forthcoming Bports and social. The looal pipers will be pleased to find that additional prizes of £2 2s, £\ la and 10s 6d (Ist, 2nd, and 3rd) will be allotted to the best looal pipers. , At St. Andrew’s Church to-morrow (Sunday) the subject of sermon in the morning will be “ How to become and keep holy,” and in the evening the subject of lecture will be, “By what class are you travelling” ? Young men specially invited. . All seats free. Special collection in aid of tho new manse fund at Ormond. The Gisborne Rifles and Defenoe Cadets strike oamp to-morrow. A ohuroh parade will be held in the mornrag at Holy Trinity, and the oamp will be thrown open to the public in tbo afternoon. The break-ing-up of the oamp acoordrag to military rules should attraot a large number of visitors. Last night an ambulance lecture was delivered by Surgeon-Oaplaia Soo’.t.

At their horse bazaar-, this afternoon Messrs Williams and Ktttlp, under instructions from Mr Wa’ter Hutobinson, who is leaving the district, will sell a large number of horses, including a bay gelding 4yrs by The Baron, two useful bbooc; mares, three 8-year-olds by SaraoeD, twp 2-year-olds by Unoas, and a yearling by Sabretache, also light and heavy draughts and a number of saddle horses.

We have received a copy of the prospectus of the New Zealand Matriculation and Civil Service Correspondence College, the aim of which instution is to bring within reach of students in any part of the colony the assistance of the most highly qualified tutors.. The directors of the college are men well-known in the New Zealand educational world, and the ten men and women composing the tutorial staff possess the highest literary attainments and teaching ability. Mr W. Lissant Clayton, J.P.,took up a subject at the Police Court yesterday morning, whioh should have the support of the S.M. and justices. It has been the custom in Gieborne to release a person on a first offence of drunkenness without flue. The Justioe pointed out that it was not a fair thing to the country that a person arrested and provided with a bed and breakfast should not have to pay for it himself. In future when he eat on the Benoh ho would make it a point to see that first offenders had to pay something for their keep. Lately it has been very noticeable to people paying attention to the matter that the first offender rule has been taken advantage of by delinquents. When a man can afford to have a “ drunk,” the Slate should not have to pay bis expenses during recovery.
