DEPUTATION FROM TRADES UNION CONGRESS.

The Premier and Mr Asquith received a oommittee of the Trades Union Congress, who urged reoogoition of tbo right of public servants to combine, and also that old age pensions should be provided. Sir H, Campbell Bannerman said it would be much safer to frankly and honestly recognise, as Sir T. Buxton had done, that thesa associations where grievances of a class existed were a great advantage, and reoeived representations of proper aud trusted officials. He had sympathy with the deputation regarding pensions, but where were they to flai the money ? Mr Asquith said it was not a question of aims. He had no reasonable prospects of a fund. The only way to carry out this and other reforms would be to reduce extravagance, to reduce the debit, and bring tbe oountry’s finanoes into a healthier and sounder condition, whioh was the Government's fixed intention.

Mr Arthur Henderson, presiding at the Labor Representation Conference, said the party’s attitude to, the Government was the same as to their predecessors. They would support thorn when possible and oppose them when neceeeary. The committee’s recommendation that credentials be given to enable the visiting delegates to Australia in the autumn to carry good wishes and their desire to co -operate wilh oolonial brethren in establishing a basis for international poaoo and goodwill was adopted.
