(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, last night.
Matthew Barnett and Peter Grant were indioted at the Supreme Court this morniDg, before Mr Justice Dennieton, for -that they did on Dec. 27,1905, being occupiers of an offioe in Hereford street, keep and use it for tho purpose of betting with persons resorting thereto, Tbe office was raided by the police on Jao. 1, and a large quantity of papers relating to bettiDg transactions seized. A plain clothes constable also succeeded in making a bet with Barnett, though on other occasions be was refused by both accused. The defence was that it was perfectly legal for a man to carry on business as a bookmaker, and make bets and record transactions, provided he did not make bets with persons resorting to the offioe, or give -tote odds. The documents seized might all refer to documents made by telephone, telegraph, or letter, and therefore legal. A verdiijtef not guilty was returned. ~ -7 mi CHKI HO MjMJj j„l ! !.! 3
