A RETIRING OFFICER

[ Wellington, last night. Mr J. \V. A. Marohant, SurveyorGeneral, who is about to retire, was appointed to tho position of SurveyorGeneral in succession to Mr S. Peroy Smith at the latter end of 1901. Mr Marohant's connection with tho New Zealand Survey Department datos baok to the early “ sixties.” In January, 1870, he made a survey of the goldfields boundary in Nelson in connection with the oelesrated dispute between miners and land

When tho general Government to"k over the service of tho colony in 1876 k- w&3 appointed first goadesioal surveyor. Three years later he b-oame Chief Surveyor of Wellington district and Commissioner of Crown Lands in 1884. In 1891 ho was transferred in tho same o&paoities to Canterbury, and in 1896 again returned to Wellington, still in the Bame oapaoities on promotion, and held " the position until appoin'od SurveyorGeneral in November, 1901, The appointment of his sucoessor has not yet been deoided, nor has the exaot date of bis retirement been fixed.
