SUTTER MARKET.
REASSURING STATEMENTS BY
EXPERTS.
LOWERING OF PRICES ONLY IN
SEASON.
(Per Prese Association.)
, . Wellington, last night, Referring to the High Commissioner's y.® tho {al > in the prioo of butter, Mr ohirtoliuj, a resident partner of A. S. Pafiorson aod 00., said this fall was not lo be looked upon ae altogether unexpected, beosuse wo were now getting on towards i the end of tho season. The butter market was_ at it} highest at Homo at about Christmas time (mid-winter), and wo should naturally look for the lowering of prioes from now forward, but ho did not anticipate any further serious deoliue. It had to be especially borne in mind in reading the High Commissioner’s reports that tho late price which ruled for oar butter (ÜBs 5i per owt) was an abnormally high price. i
From particulars which he had gathered from records of Mr Reeves’ reports kept inthe ofQoe of tho Department of Industries and Commerce, Mr Shirtoliffe found the following interesting comparisons, which go to show that to-day’s prices still keep well ahead of those recorded at similar periods in previous years.
The following were prico3 of New Zealand butter in London at (a) about Christmas 6im9 and (b) from tho early patt to the middle of February : 1903-4, (a) 100 s per owl, (b) 97s per owt; 1904-5, Ills, 102 j ; 1905-6, 116 s, 106<.
Mr Shirtoliffe concluded his interview with this pertinent question: "Why ha 3 our butter been so high this year as compared with the two preceding years if the effects of adulteration are so disastrous as they have been alleged to bo OPINION OF ANOTHER EXPERT? Another butter export expresses no alarm at the fall in prices, and says the fluctuation at this time of the year must be looked for. He, too, expresses no fear of " faking ” having a disastrous result on the New Zealand art'ole.
