A fire broke out at Onehunga and resuited in the destruction of a building oooupied by T. BraiD, butcher, as well as the partial destruction of a butcher’s shop whiob waß adjacent. The ocoupants .escaped in their night-clothes. The buildings were insured for £2OO in the South British.
The question of installation of electric power in Auckland was referred to at the City Council meeting last night, the Mayor stating that Mr W. G. T. Goodman, elec* trjoal engineer for Noyes Bros., who was commissioned to ropott on the project of generating electricity from the refuse destructor, had telegraphed as follows : “Estimats oost of first installation £20,200, estimated profit £360, alter providing interest, sinking fund, and depreciation, at the end of the second year. lam informed Christchurch Council made £BOO for tho first six months of last year after paying that.” He moved that this be referred to tbe Streets Committee. Tho Mayor said he hoped that during the next week the Council would receive a full report from Mr Goodman to enable the matter to be gone into fully and the question to be defioitely teken up. Tbe motion was carried.
Captain Southgate, of the Eteamer Kapanui, which sunk in collision with the Oliymore, has been committed to trial on a charge of manslaughter. Bail was allowed of £IOO and two sureties of £SO each.
