F IRE BRIGADES’CONFERENCE

Nelson, yesterday. The Fire Br’grdes’ Conferenca opened
to-day. Delegates from nil parts of the colony were welcomed by tho Mayor and Mr Graham, member for the city. Captain Tworney, of Lyiteltoo, presided. The report Bbowed satisfactory finances, the ciedit balance being JGISB. It expresses regret that no Fire Brigades’ Bill bas yet been placed cn the S atute Book, improving the status of tbe brigade., but more dot rmined efforts will be made this year. One of the chief difficulties bad been tbe apathy of, the brigades, which bad taken no steps to invoke assistance of local legislators who were not in touch with the objects cf the Afsooiation in this direction.
Resolutions were carried this forenoon as follows: Thanking tbe Government for subsidy ; any alterations for competitions shall not come into force rt next demonstration, unless carried by the unanimous vote of the conference. Later.—-The 2,7 th conference of tbe Firei Brigades' Assooiation .commenced to day, j Abo.ut 100 delegates were present. The executive's report showed a balance of 'assets over liabilities of JGISB 12s 3d. Disappointment was expressed at the shelviog of tbe Fire Brigades’ Bill. Tbe delegates were weloomed by the Mayor and member for Nelson. In the competition conditions Buie 12 was altered, makiog provision for.protest's. It was resolved to set np a special committee to select events to count for high pressure and manual. A banquet is being held to night. Later.—The main events at the carnival i io-day were the races, but there are a < lumber of shows to-night, and the main h loition of the oity is illuminated. c
