THE FAR EAST.

IMMENSE OPPORTUNITIES FOR TRADE.

, Mr Oakley Archer, formerly city suri veyor in Chrisfohurob, wbo lately ro- • turoed from the Far East aftsr two yoars’ i residenoa there, writeß to the Canterbury i Chamber of Commerce bringing under notioo tbe vast market now open ti New Zealand products. Ho says : " Owing tj the peaoe between Russia and Japan, and the fact that Singapore has been made the naval fca*e for the Far E-.S", an immense mvrket isopen for the following products : Oals for feed purposes, bright oaten chaff, trussed bay, bran, potatoes, onions, apples (cjoking aDd dessert), poultry, and eggs (when procurable at under ninepence a dozen), bacoD, ham, and hrd, prtsarved meats. I Before long the Japanese market for wool, flax, hides, and tallow wi 1 be opened up. Already quite a large trade is beiog done in fioer wools. Beck freights of rice, tea, tapioca, rattans, coffee, gambia. spices, fruit and Eastern curios can be secured, while full loads of jute goods and cornsacks could bo secured for the wool and grain season at Caioutts. With regard to frozen meat, the fresh meat supply of the East is very unoettain, and very inferior ; in faot, goed beef and mutton are unknown, although Queensland has started sending frozen beef, wbicb, though betfer than goat’s flesh, is a very poor Bample. Now that Singapore is a naval base, tbe army and naval contracts fir fresh meat will be as large, if not larger, than those at Gibraltar, while the ve ssls trading to the Far East all call there, both ontward and homeward bound, and would be only to glad to replenish their nrat supply in lieu of carrying it twice round the world. This is a large item, for Singapore ranks about third or fourth in importance and s tonnage of the ports of the world,” e
