BURNS ANNIVERSARY.

A MOST SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION It was a happy idea on the part of those who were responsible for tbo celebration of Burns’ Anniversary, which interesting function took plaoe in the Mssonio Hall on Thursday evening under the most pleasing oiroumstances. Upwards of 40 wore present, and the proceedings were both instructive and entertaining, Dr Scott made an excellent chairman, while Mr B. M. Birrell officiated as croupier. Tbo committee consisted of Messrs J. 0. Nieboit, T. A. Hogg, J, McKay, and H. Cameron, with Mr J. Walker Bain as secretary, Thß • latter is to ba congratulated on the completeness of the arrangements in connection with the first- gathering of the kind held in Gisborne. A most attractive programme was drawn up by Dr Scott, and this was gone through with great success. There were the usual number of toasts and somo excellent musical items. The toast of " The King ” was proposed by Dr Soott in verse, and was followed by the song, “ There was a lad was bom in Kyle,” by Mr Birrell. Other toasts were : " Bard of Caledonia ” (Birrell), “Land o’ Cakes ” (W. B. Com; mon), " Caledonian Sooiety” (E. P. Joyce), 11 Kindred Society” (R, Johnston), " Burns Club ” (R. Robortson), “ The Ladies ” (Piper W. Robertson and Mr Gitfcos), 11 Tho Local Bodies” (Nisbett), •' The Chairman” (Mr Birrell), " Press ” (Messrs Macdonald and GaudiD). Tbs toast of " The Croupier ” was also druDk with musical honors. Songs were contributed by Messrs Birrell, Barlow, Hogg, and Fraser, and reoitations by Dr Scott and Messrs Joyce and Sandlant. Mr J, H. Gittos made a most efficient acoompanist. The catering was splendidly oarriod out by Mr A. P. Hailey. Tbo gathering terminated about 1 o.m. It is hoped that now a start has been made in celebrating the Burns Anniversary, the gathering will be made an annual ono.
