TROUBLE OVER TENDERS,

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The question of tenders for the re-> inforced concrete wharf works was again considered by the Harbor Board at a special meeting last night, when, after a long discussion, it was decided on the casting vote of the chairman to call for fresh tenders.

ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER. Captain Southgate was charged at the Court this morning with manslaughter in connection with the Kapanui-Claymore collision, and was remanded to Friday, bail as formerly being allowed. FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

The annual district meeting of the Ancient * Order of iForesters unanimously carried a resolution heartily approving of the suggestion made by the Premier to hold a colonial conference of friendly societies at Wellingto*£*Turing the session of Parliament.

Tho ibody of a newly-born male child, with its feot and hands tied, was washed ashore on the Great Barrier Island recently. At tlio inquest the jury returned a verdict of wilful murder by some person unknown, adding that the child had boen strangled after birth. Several articlos of women s clothing wore wrapped around the body. The child’s neck was tied with a piece of rope. The police have mado no arrests in connection with the mysterious affair. A special sitting of the Court was held to-day to deal with the case of the man John Francis Usher, charged with several thefts, a large quantity of stolen property having been found in his possession. Tho alleged thefts totalled £ll9. Since his arrest accused had behaved iu a most violent manner. Tho asylum and gaol doctors, after careful observation, concluded that Usher was malingering. Usher maintained an attitude ot uttor stupidity throughout tho Court proceedings. Ho was committed tor trial.
