The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JAN. 26 1906. WORK OF BEAUTIFYING.

The history of public undertakings in Gisborne is surely being repeated in the matter of the Beautifying Association. In this, as with almost any other local public undertaking that can be named, there was a sweeping wave of enthusiasm, fol lowed by the inevitable lull. Just now the Association is in financial straits, and at a meeting held on Wednesday night there was rather a tone of despair as to the future. There are liabilities amounting to £51 15s 9d, and the committee are naturally not satisfied at allowing matters to drift on ia their present condition. And it will bo a lasting shame to the people of Gisborne if substantial support iB not forthcoming to at least pay for and maintain the work that has been done—work of which any town might well be proud, and wbioh has the warm admiration of every visitor. Let any of our old residents take a walk round -the 'river bank, and carry his mind back a short period, and reflect as to the beautiful ohaDge that has been made since Lbe the Association set to work. A new oomer can hardly realise what a va t improvement has been effeoted. And this is but a small portion of the excellent work that; hBS been done. In days of dire depression there might be some excuse found for a miserly spirit being shown, but it is herd to believe that in these times there should bo other than bountiful support for tbo Association in its whole sooled devotion to tbo interests of the pub'ic. Thors is no doubt the standing grievance that (hose who make generous response in the matter of voluntary contributions to Bny cause are the ones cal ed upon again and again, while others who might reasonably be expected to assist read ly are either not easily reached, or are more apt in supplying excuses than io providing a little noedful cash. Even among the generously disposed there is what may be dcsoribed as a feeling o F modesty that prevents eager haßte to seel a canvasser bent on obtaining subscriptions. However, the position of the Association has been placed before the public in a et'a'ghtforward way, and it ie to be hope! there will soon be such a ready response as will restore the Asßooiali.n to a sound financial position.

The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in a dress of white silk with veil and orange blossoms. She carried a shower bouquet of ferns and white flowers. The marriage oeremony was conducted by the Rev. J. G. Paterson. Both the young people are well and favorably known, as the number of rich and handsome weddiDg presents amply testified. They carry with them the best wishes of a large circles of friends. The following is the directors’ report to be presented to shareholders of the Gisborne Gas Company "In submitting the aooounts for 1905, your directors have pleasure in again reporting the satisfactory progress of the company’s business, the increase in sales of gas being 20 per eent over 1904. The consumption of gas for cooking, beating, and industrial purposes equalled 45 per oent of the total oatput. The re-modelling and enlarging of the plant is progressing satisfactorily. The directors have decided to reduce the prioe of gas as from the beginning of the year for all purposes to 7s 6d net per 1000 oubio feet, which, considering the high prices ruling for ooal at this port and the scattered area the company supply, is very satisfactory. A substantial reduction will also be made almost immediately in the prioe of mantles, chimneys, etc. The year’s profits amount to £3853 15s 7d (including share premium), out of -whioh an interim dividend was paid to June 30th last, absorbing £771 0s 6d. The balance, adding amount carried forward from last year, leaves £5398 16s 7d available for distribution. Your directors now recommend the payment of a further dividend of Is per share, and (in view of the sub stantial concessions granted to consumers as embodied in preceding paragraph) a bonus of 3d per share, the placing of £ISOO to reserve and the carrying forward of the balance to next year. The retiring directors are Messrs H. J. BnshDell, E. J. Chisp and G. Matshewson.who offer themselves for re-eleotiou.' Two auditors will also require to be elected.”
