STEAMER ON FIRE.
AN EXCITING TIME. . (Per- Press Association.) Auokland, last night. Captain P, MaoElwain and the crew of the s.s. Kawau had an exciting time in the early hours of Tuesday. The Kawau was moored alongside the Mangawai wharf, and at half-past 2 a.m. Chief Engineer Long was awakened by flames and smoke entering his cabin. He promptly gave an alarm, and the captain, offioers, and crew were soon hard at work trying to suppress the fire. At first it was impossible to get into the engine-room, the fire having, as it was afterwards ascertained, originated in one of the starboard coal bunkers. A bucket brigade was formed, and when the fire in the engineroom had been got under by this method, a donkey engine was got to work, pumping water which wbb directed on the seat of the fire, soon subduing it. The extent of damage will not be ascertained until a survey has been made.
