HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE.
THE KNIGHT-JEFFRIES SEASON.
To-morrow night this famous Company inaugurates its farewell season in Gisborne with a performance of “ Monsieur Beaucaire,” a play in which they have won such enthusiastic praise from press and public alike. The mountings and costumes are amongst the finest ever presented in Australia. It has been termed “A fanastic dream of roses and raptures.” The story of Booth Tarkington’s romantic and picturesque play is familiar to most play-goers—its vitality is due no doubt to its idyllic sentiment—its echo of the smart world of 1735, when “ Beau Nash ” was King of Bath and sat on the pump-room throne, and also to the fact that Lady Mary Carlyle is Miss Jeffries’ most winning impersonation, while Mr Knight as “ Beaucaire ” is a charming picture of Tar-
kington’s gallant Frenchman. “ Monsieur Beaucaire ” promises to attract a crowded audience to His Majesty’s to morrow night as the booking is very good. The second production will be the wonderfully popular play “ A Royal Divorce,” in which Mr Knight appears as Napoleon and Miss Jeffries as Josephine. This deathless play is perhaps the must successful work of modern times—vibrating as it does with the spirit of all our British people hold most dear, viz : the glorious traditions written in blood by our forefathers on such fields as Waterloo, where they met and conquered the Great Napoleon and his hosts, so changing the wholo history of the civilised world.
The third production on Saturday night is a double bill, worthy of the occasion, this performance being the farewell to Gisborne of perhaps the most popular stars and powerful Company Mr J. C. Williamson lias ever sent our way. An entirely new version of the brilliantly successful comedy drama, David Garrick, by William Musberry, will be bracketed with Mr W. S. Gilbert’s masterpiece, entitled “ Comedy and Tragedy,” a conspicuous success of last London season, now being presented for the first time in Australia.
