London, Jan, 23At the wool sales there war keen competition for all sorts at top prico3 (Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner : The mutton market is a shade weaker, competition among River Plate holders affeefc- | ing the market very Beriousdy. The averj age price to-day for Canterbury mutton is per lb, of which theie is a very limited supply. The average price to-day for other North Island mutton is 3|d per lb. The supply meets the demand. The lamb market is very quiet, there being I nothing doing in this season’s lamb. The | average price to-day for New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, is 5d per lb. The beef matket is very dull. Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light Supplies of River Plate beef are increasing. River Plate chilled hinds, 3|dper lb ; fores, 3d | per lb. The butter market has deolined, there be'mg leas demand. Buyers are holding back, expeoting prices to go lower. The price of choicest New Zealand butter to-day is 114 s per owt, Danish 119 s, Austra'ian Ills, Siberian 108 s. The cheese market is quiet, but holders are firm. The market propects are uncertain. Tho present market quotation is 63s per cwt. The hemp market is firm, with an upward tendency. There is a general and uotive demand in distant deliveries. Reports from Manila indicate light shipments of hemp from that part. The prioe of New Zealand hemp, “ good fair Wellington ” grade, on spot to-day per ton is £32 10s for January to Match shipments. The price of Manila hemp, “ fair current ” grade on spot to-day, per ton is £42. The cocksfoot seed market is firm. The average price for bright, clean Now Zealand cocksfoot seed weighing 171 b per bushel on spot to day is 533. A few enquiries are being made by speculative buyers for cooksfoot seed. Thß wool market is steady, and prices are well maintained.
