AUCKLAND BURGLARY.

A WIDE-AWAKE LANDLADY. THE PARCEL UNDER IHE BED. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night, John Scarbroa aod Christopher Heory Clarke appeared before Mr Dyer, S M., in the Auokland Po'ice Court this morning, on charges of having broken into the residence of Warren Blyth atjOnehunge, and stolen a revolver, bunch of keys and pocket knife, and farther witn having subsequently broken into the auction rooms of Warren Blyth, in Queen Btreet, and stolen £l4 Is lOd and a great quantity of jewellery and other articles, including 27 watches, to tbe total value of £52 10?. Warren Blyth gave evidence of missing keys and other articles, and finding the hack window of the premises broken open. He identifies many of the articles produced.

Mrs Anne Grimstone, at whose house Olarke bad boarded, gave evidence of the two accused being together about the same time as the robbery. Mrs Grimstone said that h6r suspicions were aroused by the peouliar stealthy way in which Clarke olcskT the door of his room on entering and leaving, When he had left the house she went into his room to investigate, She found nothing interesting till she looked under tbe bed, but then she found a parcel full of watohes all ticking. She went to Clarke’s mother’s place, and brought the mother baok to see the watches. .Clarke himself atrived and said he had got the watches 'to s -11 on commission. His mother replied : “I don’t believe' anyone woijld give you those watches to sejl without getting seourity for them. Who eve you got them from'they were not honestl, obtained, and you had better take tbeti baok to the police at once.” He said, ‘ got them hoDestiy, but if you wish then taken to the police I’ll do so.” Witnes accompanied him to the police station, ant he banded them to the police. Detective Mcflvehey said he went to set Clarke, and asked him wberg he obtained tbe articles which he had brought to thf Police Station. Clarke replied, •' In the Domain.” Witness said, “I happen to i know you did not find it in the Domain. I have been told you received it from someonp tc sell.” Clarke theD raid he got the articles from Scarbroa, who denied that be gave Claika the artipjrg. Witness took him to the Police Station' anfj atkpi him to aocount for his movements with Ciaike during the period covering the robberies, Scarbroa pot his statement in writing, denying tho robbery. Both the accused were committed for trial.
