Motor-car story from Rotorua. One day during the' Christmas week, a I motorist on the Whakarewarewa road accidentally ran over and killed a small dog that ran out from the footpath barking at the car. Very dis tressed, the motorist dismounted, and, addressing the man on the footpath that the dog had been following, said: “ I’m very sorry this ha 3 happened, Mister. Pure accident, you know Still, lam willing to pay. Will a pound fix it? ” The stranger reckoned that a pound would fix it very well. Promptly enough, the motorist handed over a sovereign, and resumed his journey. The stranger pocketed the money, and, gazing at the dead animal lying at his feet, reflectively remarked : ‘ ‘ Poor little devil. Wonder who it belonged to.’’—Observer.
