DISTANT FIELDS

NEW ZEALANDERS QUITTING SOUTH. AFRICA.

By telegraph, Press Ass’n, Copyright Sydney, Jan. 9, Mr W. Gordon Hutchinson, son of the former M.H.E. for Patea, New Zealand, has returned from South Africa by the steamer Somerset, en route to New Zealand. He states that South Africa holds no immediate prospects for Australians. The country is in the grip of the mine owners. Business is stagnant, and things about as bad as they can be. He speaks strongly against Chinese importation. Mr Hutchinson, senior, is winding up his affairs, preparatory to returning to New Zealand.
