During the past throe weeks good pro gross was made with the work of shearing, aud the dry weather which continue! bad a, marked effect on the felled bush, Tho water in tbe vatious rivers and streams was rapidly diminishing, and tbe house tanks were neatly empty. Bush fires were star t;d in eevoral localities, and good bush burns aro reported from Mangaoue and adjoining districts. A change in the weather took placß on tho evening of the 23rd intt,, whon a cold wind from tho south, accompanied by heavy rain, set in I and continued throughout tbe night. Bush fires were soon extinguished and water tanks lcplenisbcd. On tbe 23 d ins*, an accident occurred to Mr and Miss Nasmith of Gisborne, when driving back from tbe Hot Springs to Gisborne. About three miles from Morcte the road is cut through papa formation, tbe batik above the road being
about 40 feet high, and running very steep below to a depth of 80 feet or more, It appears that when p'ssing this spot some loose stones rolled on to the road and caused the horse to swerve and back the buggy down to the bottom of tbe etnbauk met-t Miss Nasmith loceived a severe shaking- The horse was uninjured, but the vehicle was badly b'oksn. The Wairoa County Council should take s'eps to bare I some prolective works erected at this and other dangerous places on the main road before a fatal accident occurs. Mr Geo. Walker, an enterprising settler, has erected a much-needed blacksmith’s shop at Morere. The annual treat to the children attending tho Moreio district ecbcol tock place in Mr Tail's paddock on Saturday last. The children, accompanied, by their parents and friends, assembled in a shady nock near the tennis court. Amplo provisions were supplied by the lidies of the district.
