At tho Catholic picnio at Riccarton racecourse yesterday a tbreo-year-old child named Darragh fell iuto tho lake, which is fairly deep in tho centre. A sister sprang in after tho chili aud caught hold of her, hut being unable to swim and out of her depth she was eooq in difficulties aud wont down. A lad named Philip Dwyer, son of Sub-luspoctor Dwyer, who heard of tho accident, immediately rushed to the lake, and dived in and succeeded in getting hold of tho girl, who had tho child in her arm?, and brought than safely to laud. Tho obildrcn bad sunk for tho third time when young Dwyer dived for them. Both were unconscious, but Sub-Inspector Dwyer who wa3 on thß spot, quickly applied first aid, and succoeded after about fifteen minutca in restoring respiration.
