GOVERNOR TAKES UP SUBJECT.
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Mr Rosser, representing the Trades and Labor Council, at the request.of. 4he Governor, had an interview with His Excellency on the sub j set of technical education among the workers. , - Lord Plunket said he desired .to awaken interest amoDg the workers. He suggested they should contribute small sums:ia accordance with their means, either by shilling subscriptions or through the unions. If the workers manifested an interest in this practical way he had no doubff ha could obtain £2OOO or £3OOO from wea'SJiiy men and merchants, to extend the operations of technical schools. .Mr Rosser pointed out that though the unions were numerically strong their funds had been spent in the Arbitration Court.. He reported the result of his interview with the Governor to tho Trades Council, who cordially approved of His Excellency’s suggestion, and resolved lo circularise tbe unions on the subject. The Trades Council discussed tbe Melbourne proposal for a six hours’ working day. The speeches were net favorable, bnt it was agreed to refer tbe proposal to the Colonial Conference for consideration.
