TECHNICAL CLASSES.
EXHIBITION OF WORK. The excellent work which has been done at the Gisborne Technical School during the past few months was demonetcated yesterday affcornoon and evening, when parents and the public were invitel by the committee to inspect the work done by the pupils. The exhibition came as a reve'a'ion to most of those present, who had not anticipated anything of the kind, and many were tho pleasing rema ks made by visitors in regard (o the high state of proficiency attained by tho pupils in sr short e period. The exhibition in the dressmaking depa tinent was highly commendable, and reflected the utmost credit upon the pupil.’ instructress, Mis Thomas, who has bom unremitting io her c2 rta-to forward tho best interests of the class. It was, indood, a matter of wonder and surprise to many present last evening to find such a fino cxbibit’oa of woile from, young ladiei who have only hud three months’ tuition, ml it is a thousand pities that iho advantages which tho Technical School has offered in this roped have not been more generally taken advantage o'. Ten Icisons of two | hours each is all that the pupils loceived aud the exhibition of woile lait oaeniog showed how well-their time lmd been employed. In a number oi cases a dress had hoon made and Irinmed, tho ivoilr of several of tho girls ca<s from 14 to 18 bring espce'aliy commendable. Tho dresses that attracted tho greatest amount of ntiention wero those tuuJo by Misses Kate llill Barrow (Wieienga-3 hika), J. Hill, Church, JoUsod, and ToiljoD, tho young ladiis coming in fjr u great amount of praise f,r their offorts. Dming the p let quarter Mrs Thomas has
had thirty-five pupi's for dressmaking and Ilia tan lessons arc given for the small sum of fivo shillings. In the woodwork section there w, s also a fine lot of work placed on view and Mr Levey,
tho instructor, has every reason to congia’u’ate himEe'f upon his pupi's’ eCfoits. The classes for woodwork have been
fairly well supported, there being upwards of two hundred pupils attending in town and country. The instruction imparted is of a most thorough character, and the work exhibited lest evening shows what a considerable amount oi knowledge can be acquired in oven one quarter, Mr J, Warren has charge cf tbo class for amateurs, aud quito a number of articles were shown which were made by young men under him. A very handsome chest of drawers was exhibited by Mr A. Morgan, whilst pretty book-case 3 were shown by Messrs W. Hall an! McCliskie. A stand for whips, made by Mr G. Morgan, was also on view, as well as a largo assort
ment of other articles. Altogether the exhibition was a highly creditable one, and should do muoh towards popularising the school
