New Plymouth, last night. The sudd-n death occurred this afternoon of an old resident, William Cottier, aged 63, He had visilod two married daughters in tho morning. He was dozing ing in the afternoon about 4,30, when, stooping, ho fell to tho ground, and never regained oonFciou3cess. Doath apparently was due to apcp'sxy and a weak heart. Deceased was born on the Isis of Man, leaving there about 1857 and prcc3eding to Australia to joiii ia the searoh for gold. Ho came to this colony in the early sixties, and arriving at New Plymouth in 1863 as a military settler during the Maori war, after which he became a hotelkeeper here, oventually owning the Criterion Hotel. He was greatly respeoted. Tho doath was a severe shock to his wife and family.
WangaDui, last night. The police have beja informed that David Sirachan, 87 yoars of age, and oae of the oldest settlors in the distfict, was found drowned in a creek at Okoia this evening. Deceased and a man named Lampshear were fencing, and os they did not return for tea search was made. Straohan'e hat was found floating in the creek, and his body was subsequently taken out of the water. Lampshear has not been seen siooe, and it is prosumed that ho also was drowned. His hat, coat, and waistcoat were found at the spot where they had been working.
Blenheim, Inst night. A young man named John Anderson was committed for sentence to-day on a charge of breaking and entering .business places at Picton and Blenheim a few days ago, and slealing property to the value of about £4O. Ho pleaded guilty. Au interesting feature was that in the caso of the Blonboim burglary finger prints on the cash-bos led to Anderson’s incrimination.
Invorcirgill, last night. "'The Metropolitan Show to-day had a record attendance. The conditions were ideal until 4 o’c'ock, when light rain began. Tho showing of Clydesdales was superb, and tho buck-jumping by North Island horses gave a contest that was oxoiting and prolonged. Sell woo, with Hodgson second. Today’s championships were: Clydesdale, entire D. C. Clark’s Tam o’ Shantor, reservo champion OhrystnlV Lord Cranbourne, mire W. Gray and Sons' Nelly Gray ; thoroughbred, entiro J. It. Mackenzie’s Pallas, mare W. Swale. Dunedin last night.
A conference took place to-night between a sub-committee of the Otago Uuivers'ty Council and the New Zealand Dental Association, when a deoision was arrived at affirming tho desirability of a dental schcol and hospital in connection with tho Otago university. Justice Williams reserved decision in a case in which F, Z. Moore, solicitor, was called upon to show cause why he should not be struok off the rolls or suspended for alleged professional misconduct iu proceeding under a judgment summons when he had no authority or tho authority had impliedly been withdrawn. Christchurch, last night.
A deputation from tho Agricultural Committee of the Exhibition waitrd od the Canterbury A, and P. Arsociation today, asking that body to hold a four days’ show during the exhibition instead of the usual throe days’ fixture. The commiltse offe ed the association a Bhbsidy of £IOOO if tho proposal were accepted, the conditions boing that the privileges granted by tho association to its own members should be extended to membors of oil similar associations all over the colony, and that medals commemorative of tho exhibition should be struck and issued as prizes. The associa'ion resolved to aocopt the offor and couditions, subject to the expenditure of tho money being under tho solo oontrolof the association. A gift from tho trustees of the Cashmere Hills estate, Christchurch, of a silo for a consumptive sanatorium, covering over twolvo acres, and worth £2OOO, was accepted by tho consumptive sanatorium executive to-day. Tho sum of £ISOO has now been provided, independent of the site.
