SHOOTING A SEAL

FINES OF £25,

(Per Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. At Port Chalmers to-day George Francis Moir and Peter Thorn pleaded guilty to shcoting a seal at Waitaki. The twE-. men were in a boat when they saw thfc seal, and at once shot it without thinking of the consequence!. Mr Chamberlain, Collector of Custom's, said the Marino Department had no desire to be vindictive, as tho accused admitled the offeocs, but it should be widely known that seals were protected. The southern coast of. the colony at one time teemed with seals, and they might have become a source of enormous wealth, but they were recklessly killed or driven away. Now, after the Governmeat had carefully preserved seals, hoping they would return to their old haunts, no sooner did one show its nose than some would-be sportsmen shot it. The accused were fined in the minimum penalty of £25 each. Mr Chamberlain said ho would make representations to the Department to reduce the fine.
