A BIG DEFICIT,

Tho Treasurer has delivered his Budget, which showed that the year closed with ft debit balance of £120,000. revenue for the present year is £3,635,0119, and expenditure £3,721,000, leaving a deficit of £86,000. In 1900 the indebtedness wa3 £63 10s per head, and it is now £6l 19s, though five millions has since been borrowed. The ex'sting loan authorisation has been exhausted, and a farther authorisation is necessary for the completion of work which has hitherto been undertaken from revenue. The Treasurer said they could not doubt the permanence of ihe goldfields, but as only a little of the auriferous area had been scra'ched over, the prospector must be granted reasonable assistance. The agricultural industry was prospering. The railways bad returned a net profit for tho year of £15,000.
