THE CABLES.
POOLING PROPOSAL,
In the course of one of his speeches in the South the Postmaster-General entered an emphatic protest against the suggestion made at the Pacific Cable Conference in London, that England, Canada, Australia, and Now Zealand should pool the receipts of the international messages over the Eastern and Pacific cables. Interviewed in Wellington on the matter Sir Joseph Ward said what hi particularly objected to was the fact that the proposal was for ten years, and at the end of that period the Eastern Cable Company was to revert to the existing condition of things. This would come to practically what was proposed under an agreement made by the New South Wales Government some time ago, to which New Zealand took decided exception at the time. Sir Joseph maintains that it would be a gross breach of faith, particularly to the people of Canada and Now Zealand, who joined in with the Old Country and Australia for the express purpose of having a completely independent State-owned route. Moveover, to tie the business up for ten years under this proposal would, to a largo extent, minimise the distinct advantages that would attach to a cable owned by the Government of England, Canada, Australia, and New Zealaud. Allying it with a public company was contrary to the original intention of the State partnership. “It would be infinitely preferable,” Sir Joseph continued, “to nationalise the Eastom Cable Company’s lines of cable from England to Australia and New Zealand—that is, of course, provided the company was agreeable to sell—so as to have a completely State-owned and State-Governed service, as is the case with the ’telegaaph systems in England, Australia, and New Zealaud, all q£ which work most advantageously for the public at large, giving them a thoroughly efficient servico at a minimum cort.” Sir Joseph added that the New Zealand Government had cabled Homo objecting to tlio polling proposal, and urging that it bo not permitted.
