A BIG FIRE.
(Per Press Association.) Christohurob, last nigh*. A disastrous fire occurred to-night in j Woolston Tannery, owned by Bewron 1 Bros. Out of a'l the buildings, oovering ’ sis acres, the only portion not absolutely 1 gutted waa the carriers’ shed, whioh was itsilf badly damaged by fire. A great stock of leather and hides and moat of the maohinery was destroyed, and Bowron Bros, state that the insurances (which are not yet ascertainable) will not cover the losses. Fully 150 men were employed at the tannery, and as the bnay season was just oommenoing tbe loss to the wage earner will be serious. The fire is supposed to have started in the vicinity of 4he boiler bous*, but the oeuse of the outbreak is a mystery. The ohemioal engine steamer and railway steamer were soon on the spot, bat ail ebanoe of saving the buildings was hopeless from the first. The building was mostly composed oi wood and corrugated iron, and a great quantity of grease and oil in a shed in oonneolion with the tannory assisted the , flames. The fire was discovered shortly before 7 o’clock, and was still smoulioring at 11.
