SOHEME FOR IMPROVING RIVER COURSE.

The meeting of those interested in the olearing of snags from the upper reaches of the Waimata river, convened by Messrs G. J. Black and V. Barker, at the Masonic Hotel last evening was largely attended, knd considerable enthusiasm was shown in the movement. There were present Messrs G. J. Black,

Vi Barker, F. Parker, W. 0. MoLean, A. W. Millar, L Sherriff, Goffa, 0. vWthomas, 0. Adair, W. Smith, and 0. J. Hamilton. Mr Ulaok was elected chairman, and Mr 0. J. Hamilton honorary secretary and treasurer* Those present formed themselves into a committee,to forward the movement, with the addition of Messrs W. F. OederWall and W. B. Mander, It is the intention of the committee to make a preliminary survey of the river as far as the Hole-in-the-wall, and ascertain what is necessary to be done to make a ’ clear channel which will allow the safe passage of lannohes and boats, so that the public may have easier access to the pieasaDt summer resorts that are available on the river bank. It is the intention to interview the Har. bor Board with a view of getting their oonsent to the carrying out of the work, and, if possible, to obtain their assistance, and for this purpose a sub-committee was appointed, consisting o! the Chairman, Secretary, and Messrs Barker, Miller, Parker, Dewing, and Cederwal).
