The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, NOV. 29, 1905. FOLLY OF REDUCTION.

An important point in connection with the local option poll this day week requires to be impressed upon the atten- ; tionjof the electors. The no license party have taken every means to seek to induce the electors to strike out only the top . line, and many may assume that in following this advice they are I giving a straight-out vote for licenses or no-licenses, and thus be led into the error ol voting, for reduction., To carry, the latter a bare majority is required, and it is probable that with well-con-sidered voting the number supporting reduction will not be anything like a majority. ' Keduction would simply mean the creation of a monopoly. By the ordinary increase in population and the stationary number of houses, there is a proportipnate reduction each. year, but not at the expense of the in- ■ dividuals. For instance, it is expected that the voters this election will be at least two thousand over those of last year,;,but the number of houses is not greater. There are some people, we know, who would consider it a triumph' to shut up any single house, but we; doubt if there is a majority who really hold that view. Many, we know, who would vote for the sweepingof licenses would not knowingly support creating a monopoly by reduction. Therefore if they mean to vote no-license they; should strike out the two lines, and; thus let all licenses stand or fall together. Our advice to all electors is to strike out two lines, and not one ; only. , ■
